First-date safety
Build a plan you can send to a friend
The tool builds a safety plan for a first date: who you are meeting, where, when, and by what time you will message a friend. It also runs through ten points worth settling before you leave. The plan can be copied as it stands and sent to someone close to you. The most important field is the check-in time: without it a friend knows the place but not when to start worrying. Nothing is sent to a server.
Fill in four fields and tick what is already sorted. The tool builds a safety plan you can copy to a friend. Nothing is sent to a server.
Fewer than half the points are ticked. Work through the rest before you leave — most take a minute.
If the situation feels wrong, leave. You do not owe an explanation and you do not have to wait for the bill — the emergency number is 112.
The tool does not store the fields and does not send them anywhere. The plan is assembled in your browser and disappears when you reload the page.
The most important part of the plan is a time
The advice to tell someone where you are going appears in every safety list, and is still rarely followed. The reason is not carelessness but that, at the moment of leaving, writing that message feels awkward and so it never gets written.
The second reason is that a place on its own is not enough. If your friend knows the name of the restaurant but not when you are supposed to check in, they find out about a problem only when they think to ask themselves. That may be the following morning.
So the plan has four fields rather than two, and the fourth is the load-bearing one: the time by which you will send a message. Everything else is built around it. Once the time is agreed, your friend does not have to guess whether silence is normal.
Below the plan sit three numbered instructions: call, try again after fifteen minutes, then call 112 and give them the place and the time. The instructions are there because in an anxious moment a person does what is written rather than what they invent.
And when you send it, agree that the other person is actually waiting for the message. A plan left unread in a chat is not a plan.
Why these ten points
The list is not general safety advice but a set of decisions taken before you leave, which can no longer be taken once you are there.
A public place and your own transport belong together. Both mean the same thing: you decide when the meeting ends. If someone else is driving, they decide.
A video call before meeting is the cheapest check there is. It takes a minute and clears out most fake profiles, because a video call is precisely what a profile built on stolen photos cannot do. The markers are worked through on the page nine markers of a fake profile.
An agreed finishing time for a first meeting is not rudeness. It is an exit that exists in advance and does not require inventing an explanation at the moment when inventing one is hardest.
And money: promise nothing and lend nothing at a first meeting. This is the only point on the list that has nothing to do with physical safety, and it is there because it is the commonest way a meeting turns into harm.
Who to call in Finland
There are three numbers, and they are for different situations.
The emergency number 112 is for when something is happening now. Call it even when you are unsure: assessing the situation is the dispatcher’s job, not yours.
Victim Support Finland (Rikosuhripäivystys) on 116 006 is for the victim of a crime and for those close to them, free of charge. You can call it when nothing formally provable has happened but you feel weighed down.
Nollalinja on 116 016 is for anyone who has experienced violence or the threat of it, whatever their gender. It is open round the clock, every day of the year, and it is free. Three things are worth knowing: help is available through an interpreter in several languages; staff do not see the caller’s contact details; and the call does not appear on the phone bill or the itemisation. The last matters when a phone is being watched.
A police report can be filed afterwards at poliisi.fi. It is worth filing even where the matter stayed in words: a single report may be the one that connects the earlier ones.
What the tool does not do
It does not send the plan. The fields live in your browser, the plan is assembled there, and it disappears when you reload the page. Sending is left to you, because the place and time of a meeting are exactly the kind of information that should not sit on any server.
It checks nobody. It does not tell you whether the person you are meeting is who they claim to be — for that there is a separate profile checklist and the shape of a romance scam.
It does not rate the venue. Nothing calculable follows from the name of a restaurant, and any figure produced from it would be invented.
And it does not replace telling someone. The tool’s only job is to make telling them easy enough that it does not go undone.
What this list does not mean
Safety lists are easily read as though an unticked point were the cause of what happened. This list does not mean that, and that reading is not true.
Responsibility for violence and for fraud lies with the person who commits it. It is not divided according to where the victim went, what they wore, how long they stayed, or whether they messaged a friend beforehand.
These points exist for one purpose: they reduce harm in the event that someone else decides to act badly. They are not a condition that earns you safety by being met.
If something did happen, help exists regardless of how many points went unticked. Victim Support Finland 116 006, Nollalinja 116 016, emergency number 112.
Why each point is on the list
| Point | What it settles |
|---|---|
| A public place | People are around who can be asked for help |
| Your own transport both ways | You decide when the meeting ends |
| A video call beforehand | Clears out fake profiles in a minute |
| A check-in time with a friend | Silence becomes noticeable |
| An agreed finishing time | An exit exists and needs no explanation |
| No money at a first meeting | The commonest way a meeting turns into harm |
The points reduce harm in case the other person acts badly. They do not move responsibility for what happened onto the victim.
Frequently asked
Does what I type go anywhere?
No. The fields live in your browser, the plan is assembled there, and it disappears when you reload the page. The site has no sign-up and no server that would take in such information. The place and time of a meeting are exactly the data that should not be stored anywhere.
What matters most in the plan?
The time by which you will check in. The place tells your friend where to look, but only the check-in time tells them when to start looking. Without it, silence is indistinguishable from an ordinary evening.
Who do I call if something is happening now?
The emergency number 112. Call even when you are unsure: assessing the situation is the dispatcher’s job. Afterwards, support comes from Victim Support Finland on 116 006, and for anyone who has met violence or its threat, from Nollalinja on 116 016.
Does a call to Nollalinja show on the phone bill?
No. The THL states that the call appears neither on the phone bill nor on the itemisation, and that staff do not see the caller’s contact details. The line is open round the clock every day of the year, it is free, and help is available through an interpreter in several languages.
Is asking for a video call before meeting excessive?
It is not. It takes a minute and clears out most fake profiles, because that is precisely what a profile running on stolen photos cannot do. If the request offends the other person, that is information in itself.
I ticked only some of the points. Is it safe to go?
The list neither grants permission nor forbids. It sets out which decisions are taken before leaving, because on the spot they can no longer be taken. And what another person does is not your responsibility, however many points went unticked.
