Espoo in numbers
Espoo had 212 214 residents aged 20–69 at the end of 2025, and 84 131 of them, 39.6 per cent, did not live at the same address as a spouse or cohabiting partner. That share is the lowest of any Finnish city with more than 100 000 residents; nationally it is 41.9 per cent. Not all of those 84 131 are single: the number also covers couples with separate homes and adults living with their parents (how we count).
Among those who do not live with a partner, younger men outnumber younger women. In their twenties there are 137 men for every 100 women, the highest ratio of any Finnish city with more than 100 000 residents. After 50 the balance turns: 86 men for every 100 women in the fifties, 64 in the sixties.
A quarter of residents, 84 225 people or 25.9 per cent, have a first language other than Finnish, Swedish or Sámi, against 11.4 per cent nationally.
Meeting people in English in Espoo
Hello Espoo Info, the city’s service for newcomers, is at Suomenlahdentie 1, Iso Omena Service Centre. Its page says staff can help “in plain Finnish, English or your own language”, with a telephone interpreter if needed. It is open Monday to Wednesday 10.00 to 15.00 (lunch break 11.30 to 12.30) and covers forms, Kela, taxes and day care. On Saturday 24 October 2026 the city holds a Hello Espoo event at Sello Library, Leppävaarankatu 9, for people who have just moved to Espoo or are thinking of moving. From 12.00 to 15.00 there is a service fair with the city, NGOs and other organisations. The event is free, and the city asks visitors to register in advance.
English discussion groups are listed at three libraries on the city’s language café page: Tapiola on Wednesdays 18.00 to 19.30 (2 September to 16 December 2026), Sello on Thursdays 16–17 and Lippulaiva on Thursdays 18.30 to 19.45 (both 3 September to 10 December). The page says language cafés need no advance sign-up. It does not say who the English groups are for or who runs them. Most of the city’s other language cafés practise Finnish, among them the Finnish Red Cross cafés at Entresse library.
Elsewhere, the Espoo Adult Education Centre says it runs courses and activities in English, from languages and sports to cooking. The CultureEspoo events calendar and the Visit Espoo events page are in English.
