Tampere in numbers

Tampere had 180 216 residents aged 20–69 at the end of 2025. Of them, 87 334 (48.5 per cent) did not live at the same address as a spouse or cohabiting partner, against 41.9 per cent nationally. That is not the number of singles: it includes couples who live apart and adults who live with their parents. See how we count.

Among those without a partner, men and women are nearly balanced: 103 men for every 100 women, against 115 nationally. The ratio is 105 in the twenties, 127 in the thirties and 114 in the forties, then it turns: 91 in the fifties, 68 in the sixties.

Of residents aged 20–69, 34.2 per cent live alone, in line with other large university cities: 35.0 per cent in Turku, 33.1 in Jyväskylä and 29.6 in Helsinki. A first language other than Finnish, Swedish or Sámi is registered for 31 487 residents (12.0 per cent), against 11.4 per cent nationally.

In Google Trends’ comparison of Finland’s 18 regions over the last 12 months, Pirkanmaa, the region around Tampere, ranked 7th for “deitti”, the Finnish word for a date. For “tinder” it was in the middle of the regions. A Yle and University of Turku survey found that 53 per cent of adult Finns have at least tried a dating service, and 60 per cent of those who have used one have used Tinder. Dating services do not publish user numbers for individual cities.
